Welcome to the Vancouver Giants prospect report. In this series, we look at how some of the team’s prospects are doing so far this season. This edition will look at Burke Hood, Masun Fleece, Cooper Simpson and Liam Magnuson.
Burke Hood
A 2022 sixth-rounder, Burke Hood has built off his strong training camp and has been great so far for the RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg’s U18 team. At just 15, he looks like he belongs posting a 2.74 goals against average and a .913% save percentage. He also has a shutout through his eight games.
Hood was a stand out at Giants training camp which earned him a contract. At 6’2″, 174 pounds, he has good size and showed strong vertical movement when in goal. Alongside Matthew Hutchison, it looks like the Giants goaltending position is well taken care of for the next few years.
Masun Fleece
After putting up 106 points in 51 games last season, Masun Fleece is once again off to a hot start with 15 goals and 36 points in 31 games for Shattuck St. Mary’s 16U AAA team. A 2021 US priority draft pick, the California native continues to evolve his game and looks strong playing once again this season. A 2025 NHL Draft prospect, he is already showing signs he could be a potential top 64 pick.
Cooper Simpson
Another American who is excelling, Cooper Simpson has ten goals and 16 points through his first nine games this season. The Minnesota native is playing in his home state with the Minnesota Blades 15U AAA team and was a second-round US priority draft pick of the Giants in 2022. A prospect that has a nose for the net, he is already off to a hot start after posting 24 goals in 23 games last season.
Liam Magnuson
The Giants selected Liam Magnuson in the seventh round of the 2022 prospect drafts and all he has done since then is impress. He has already been bumped up to St. George’s School U18 Prep team after posting ten points in 11 games with the U17 team. Despite not putting up massive numbers, this is a player who has now been promoted to a higher age class each of the last two seasons. A right-shot defenceman who was impressive at Giants training camp this season, look for him to be fighting for a contract next year.
