Welcome to another WHL Best of the 2010s feature where we profile the best WHL players from the 2009-10 season all the way to the 2019-20 season. Players are judged based on what they did in each division. This means if a player spent time in multiple divisions, their placement will be judged based on what they did separately while in each division. Few were as dominant on the blueline as Madison Bowey during their WHL careers. The former captain of the Kelowna Rockets had 172 points in 259 games and captained the Rockets to within one goal of a Memorial Cup Championship. His resume is stacked as he delivered night after night on the ice.
After a four game stint that included a playoff game in 2010-11, Bowey made the Rockets out of camp in 2011-12. In his first season, he scored eight goals and added 13 assists in 57 games and helped the Rockets clinch a playoff spot. During the season, he led all defenceman on the Rockets in goals and finished second in points by a defenceman despite being a rookie.
Bowey started to blossom in his second season as he scored 12 goals and added 18 assists in 30 games. He also added four assists in 11 playoff games that season. During the year, he was invited to the CHL Top Prospects Game, won Gold at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial and captured Gold at the U18 WJC.
During the 2013-14 season, he scored a career high 21 goals and added 39 assists in 72 games. He also participated in 14 playoff games scoring five goals and adding nine assists. For his efforts, he was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team.
Bowey’s final year in the WHL was his best as he registered 60 points including 17 goals in 58 games. He was also named to Team Canada at the World Juniors winning Gold for his country. Thanks to a strong regular season, he was named to the WHL First All-Star Team. After a 19 point in 19 game playoff run, he helped Kelowna make it to the Memorial Cup where he scored one goal and added five assists on their way to the Championship game. Although they lost in OT, he was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star team for his efforts.
Although his point production doesn’t shoot off the page, Bowey was one of the best defenceman in the WHL during the 2010s. He could play physical, rarely made mistakes and was able to drive the offense. Few did it better than number four which is why he makes out list.
